Research

At the heart of any skincare product are the active ingredients that provide the source of skincare product efficacy & at the core of Clearica is our expansive Natural Product Library. Over the past decade, our Research & Development team’s state-of-the-art laboratories have created one of the largest US-based plant extract libraries in the world. Clearica mined the best candidates from its collection of over 4,000 plant species, which were subsequently subjected to a proprietary process to enhance the polyphenol contents in the extracts.

Sourcing

The discovery process involved to determine the use of plant materials from our extensive plant extract library took us/takes several years (extraction, purification, and screening with in-vitro safety, efficacy testing, followed by formulation, product testing, and proof of concept clinical trials (patch test)).
Some of our plant-based extracts are derived from upcycling waste plant material streams that have been exploited for some other application and the remaining biomass has no more utility left in that application. We harvest the relevant phytochemicals from this spent mass. For example, guava plants are harvested for their fruit and the leaves are discarded. We work with specific farms to source these discarded leaves as our starting raw material to extract an enriched form of Polyphenols, Saponins, and “Guaijavarin” combination resulting in naturally producing anti-microbial and also a powerful anti-oxidant.

Extraction

The process of plant actives extraction of drawing specific compounds from raw plant material can be achieved by many methods. The simplest and most-recognizable form, on a small scale, is when hot water is used to make tea or coffee. In this case, water acts as a solvent to separate key compounds from the raw material.There is no right extraction method, each process is designed specifically for a given product. Clearica’s proprietary extraction involves a synergistic method called the PENTAPHYTO process (patent pending). The specific ingredient combination synergistically works together to provide a greater outcome than the sum of its parts.

These enriched fractions allow for the detection & identification of previously missed compounds that are often masked in crude extracts, creating a rich pipeline of potent plant ingredient extracts for the next generation of skincare. Together, these 35,000 extracts create a unique, unexplored reservoir of chemical diversity, enabling Clearica’s future exploration for the discovery of new products.
